As an entrepreneur and member of the startup community, we all know that it is our responsibility to support our local communities whenever we can. But when “can” a business start giving back? Sarjoo Patel, CEO of Beam Healthcare says that “A company has two paths it can take. Some say scale, scale and then you can give back. Or you can do good at a smaller level on an ongoing basis during this journey and directly impact the people, community and healthcare ecosystem in general. That’s the path we chose.”
From day one, Beam Healthcare has been focused on paying it forward. For Sarjoo, the path to medicine was an unconventional one. His background was in Operation Management Information Systems (OMIS) before he decided to join the field of medicine when he lost one of his best friends and other loved ones that were critically ill. Business and technology were always his passion (and still are), but medicine was going to be his way of directly supporting his community.
“You Beam They Beam” is an umbrella term that emcompasses Beam Healthcare’s initiatives to give back. Beam is passionate about giving back in the areas of healthcare, education and climate. “That’s what we understand best,” said Sarjoo. “We know that a healthy climate has a lot to do with our mind and body. We also know that getting access to education leads to overall increased wellbeing of an individual.” The three main initiatives that Beam is currently focused on are:
Sarjoo founded Beam Healthcare with the goal of helping to solve healthcare inequality. Not too long after, he realized that access to healthcare was just part of the solution. The mission of BeamUp is to help create equality and opportunities for youth and young adults of lower socioeconomic status by providing access to healthcare, nourishment, and education. By empowering them with these necessary tools, they are better equipped to lift themselves out of poverty and violence. BeamUp volunteers are currently providing support and guidance to telemedicine clinicians in Mexico and Papua New Guinea, with aspirations to further expand within the United States and across the globe. BeamUp also provides access to Scrimba, a platform that allows children to acquire coding skills without requiring attendance in a formal classroom setting.
Through these initiatives, we are committed to helping those in need be the healthiest and best versions of themselves. We have the tools and expertise to share our knowledge nationally and globally. Technology makes us closer, which makes this possible. We’d love your help in continuing BeamUp’s missions in communities around the world.

Beam Healthcare’s respiratory therapists work with patients of all ages to ensure they are able to breathe well. Respiratory therapy is all about breathing, and we know that trees clean up our planet’s air and allow us all to breathe better.
Through their leaves and bark, trees absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen for us to breathe. Motivated by Beam’s eco-friendly culture, the RT team felt that One Tree Planted was the perfect opportunity to improve the health of both people and the planet.
For every patient that the RT team cares for, Beam plants one tree. Together we can restore forests, promote biodiversity, and make a positive social impact around the world. Through your business, you can plant one tree for every product or service sold, donate a percentage of sales, or set up a recurring donation.
There are many ways to get involved, but we believe that adopting a one-for-one model is a simple and great way to get started!
Pledge 1% is global movement that encourages and empowers companies of all sizes and stages to give back to the community. With this flexible framework, companies can choose to donate 1% of their time, product, profit, and/or equity to any charity of their choosing.
Over the years, Beam Healthcare has supported our local community hospitals and their non-profits, along with various non-profits in the Madison community. This is where we have chosen to focus our efforts, but each business has a unique opportunity to help in the areas that they know best.
The best part of Pledge 1% is that the impact grows and expands as we do. The more successful we are, the larger impact we are committed to creating. Join us in taking the pledge today to make our world a better place.
These are just a few of the ways in which Beam is committed to giving back. Our focus is on healthcare, education and climate because that’s what we understand best. We want to leave the world a better place for the next generation, and we are doing our part in that by creating healthier people and taking care of the planet. We’re doing this in our own way, but we also know that one company can’t do this all by themselves.
Everyone can give back in their own way. Even in the early stages of starting a business, you can start giving back at a smaller level. As you continue to grow, you can enjoy the journey and continue to create a larger impact in the areas that you are passionate about. Sarjoo says, “You may have it bad, but there’s always someone who has it worse. Our goal is to help someone who has it worse. At an individual or company level, nothing makes you feel better than helping others. Surround yourselves with people who enjoy that journey and want to be a part of it.”
